Fusion is one of the first hatchbacks by Ford. It gained good popularity when it was first launched. It has got a great design and at the time it was launched no other hatchback had a similar design. The Ford Fusion has got four variants available in the market. They are Ford Fusion 1.6 Duratec Petrol, Fusion Plus 1.6 Duratec Petrol, 1.4 L TDCi Diesel and Fusion 1.4 L TDCi Diesel. There are two engine options given in the Ford Fusion. The first one is the 1.6 litre four cylinder petrol engine that gives maximum power of 101 PS at 6500 rpm and maximum torque of 146 Nm at 3400 rpm. The second one is the 1.4 litre TDCi diesel engine. It develops maximum power of 68 Bhp at 4000 and maximum torque of 16.3 Kgm at 2000 rpm. Fusion has got a five speed manual transmission gearbox. The total weight of Fusion is 1180 kgs. The car has got rear self-adjusting drum brake and front ventilated disc brakes. For the front, Fusion has got independent McPherson strut off-set coil dampers stabiliser bar suspensions and for the rear it has got non-independent twist beam suspension with coil springs. The fuel tank capacity of Fusion is a good 45 litres. The size of the tyres is 195/60 R15. The ground clearance comes to 198 mm and the measurements are 1529 mm height, 3989 mm length and 1720 mm width.
Ford Fusion is available in many attractive colours. They are mood dust silver, paprika red, mystic wine, diamond white and panther black. The styling of the car is done in the European style to make it look truly international. The build of the car is tough and durable too. The newer version of Fusion has got new great looking bumpers. 15 inch alloy wheels add to the look of the car. The side body mouldings contribute to the tough look of the car. At the front and the rear fog-lamps have been enhanced to improve the on-road visibility. The high quality steel used in the body of the car is good enough to protect it against crashes. The interiors of petrol and diesel variants of the Ford Fusion look identical. The materials used on the doors are of average quality. Despite the makeover given to the car the plastics used in the dashboard and the seat covers are of low quality and no enhancement is seen there. Rubber mat can be found in the cabin now. The interiors are done up in dual tone colour scheming. The instrument panel of Fusion has been integrated on the central console itself. The steering wheel is leather covered and gives a fine look. Fusion is most popularly known for its leg room and cargo space. The seats of the car have been positioned high for the utmost comfort of the passengers as they can sit in an upright position. Below the driver’s co-passenger seat a small storage space has been added. The high positioning of the seat makes entering and exiting cabin much easier even for elderly people. The luggage area is ample and the 60:40 split/folding seats make up for an even bigger luggage space.
The performance of the petrol variants remain more or less the same but some good changes are seen in the diesel variants of the Ford Fusion. The new Fusion weighs over 30 kgs more than the older one. In this new improved hatchback the ECU has been re-calibrated. The gearbox and gear ratios all are the same but a definite improvement is seen in the drive quality plus the mileage has also enhanced. The mileage of the diesel variant is seen to be 13 kmpl in the city and 17.9 kmpl on highways. If we compare the drive quality of the petrol Fusion and the diesel one, we would vote for the latter as it is much better than the former. With better and enhanced suspension performance you won’t feel the thud it earlier created on entering puddles and potholes. The ground clearance has also been made higher for safer drive. Ford Fusion accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 17.74 seconds which is average. The safety features of this hatchback include child lock for the rear doors, electronic brake force distribution and anti-lock brake system.
