Grand i10 Review – Hyundai’s 2nd best selling small car !

The Hyundai Grand i10 is one of the best hatchbacks. And, it is popularly known as ‘the Grand’. Like most other Hyundais, the Grand i10 too looks very premium. This premium hatchback carries forward Hyundai’s Fluidic design theme. The hatchback gets the segment first rear AC vents.

The Hyundai Grand i10 foes up against the likes of the Ford Figo, Toyota Etios Liva, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Tata Bolt and Maruti Suzuki Ritz. The diesel trim of Hyundai Grand i10 starts at Rs. 5.58 lakhs and goes up to Rs 6.41 lakh while the petrol trims are priced between Rs. 4.72 lakh to Rs. 6.90 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

ENGINE AND SPECIFICATIONS

In petrol variant Hyundai Grand i10 uses 4 cylinder VTVT 1.2 litre engine  while diesel variant with 3 cylinder uses U2 CRDI technology

The Hyundai Grand i10 is offered with two engine options – one petrol and one diesel. The 1.2-litre VTVT petrol engine has 4-cylinder with 16 valves and a displacement of 1197 cc. The engine produces a maximum of 83 bhp at 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 114 Nm at 4000 rpm. The tried and tested petrol powered engine is smooth and frugal and is still available with the bigger i20 model.

On the other hand, the diesel engine has 3-cylinder with 12 valves and a displacement of 1120 cc and comes equipped with the newly developed second generation U2 CRDi technology. The diesel engine generates 70 bhp at 4000 rpm and has a peak torque of 161 Nm at 1500 – 2750 rpm. 

Both petrol and diesel models of the Hyundai Grand i10 are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. On the plus side, the petrol engine comes available with a 4-speed automatic transmission. And, both the engine starts / off with the push of a button.

As far as mileage is concerned, the diesel engine of the Hyundai Grand i10 offers 24 kmpl while, the petrol engine returns fuel mileage figures of 18.9 kmpl.

EXTERIOR

In base Hyundai Grand i10 model  , the body coloured door handles, tail gate and mirrors are absent  however its  256 litre of boot space and plenty of cup holders is a matter of some respite

The Hyundai Grand i10 looks very sporty, elegant, beautiful and premium than any other car in its segment. The hatchback follows Hyundai’s elegant Fluidic design. Its design matches with the Hyundai i20 closely but, nonetheless, it is more compact than i20. Besides, the vehicle has sculptured bodylines, which makes it very soothing to look at while the sweeping headlamps makes the front fascia very strong.

It is true that the company has made the Grand i10 brilliant notwithstanding, several things are missing on the lower variants such as the top end variants get full size wheel covers, while the base variant gets just the steel rims. In the same way, the diamond cut alloy wheels, which is one of the main highlights of the exterior, can be fitted only with the top end variant. The micro roof antenna and the wait-line moulding, which saves the car from a lot of scratches are also not available in the base variant. The top end variant gets the chrome dipped outside door handles for a premium look whereas the base variant misses out on body coloured door handles, tail gate and mirrors.    

The Hyundai Grand i10 is available with a choice of 8 colours- Golden Orange, Pure White, Silky Beige, Wine Red, Phantom Black, Sleek Silver, Stardust and Twilight Blue.

INTERIOR

Hyundai Grand i10 is much more spacious with premium looking interiors

The Hyundai Grand i10 has premium looking interiors. The cabin of the hatchback is made of dual tone black and beige interiors. The Hyundai Grand i10 gets rear AC vents which, in point of fact, are a segment first. Besides, it has steering mounted audio controls, driver seat height adjustment, tilt-steering, cooled glove box and integrated music system with segment first 1GB of internal memory storage, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connection.

The Hyundai Grand i10 is much more spacious in the inside and seats are comfortable. The hatchback gets 256 litre of boot space with a lot of cup holders and cubby holes distributed all around the cabin. The car features a very smart center console, a start stop button, reversing camera and park assist. And, the steering wheel and the gear knob are leather wrapped.

PERFORMANCE

TGrand i10 has a mileage of 24kmpl in diesel version while petrol falls short with a mileage of 18.9 kmpl

One of the strong points of the Hyundai Grand i10 is its riding which is superb. The handling is good for city driving. In terms of safety, the higher variants of the Hyundai Grand i10 comes with ABS with EBD, that helps to stop the car with complete control.  The braking system has disc brakes at the front, while the rear has drums. Other safety features include front fog lamps, engine immobilizer, day and night inside rear view mirror and central locking.

ADVANTAGES

The interiors of the Hyundai Grand i10 are the best in class in terms of build quality and finish. The company has used high quality materials. The hatchback gives a perfect mileage.    

DRAWBACKS

Diesel engine of the Hyundai Grand i10 is not very powerful. The hatchback does not have climate control feature. Besides, dimension wise, the Hyundai Grand i10 is not as long or as wide as its competitors. The hatchback has the shortest wheelbase with 2425 mm.

VERDICT

No doubt, the Hyundai Grand i10 is the best choice in its segment. The hatchback packs almost every feature needed in a car. Although, the base model of the Hyundai Grand i10 misses out on many essential things, the top end model offers almost all first-in-class features.
