Toyota Fortuner Review – A successful 7 seater suv in India

The Toyota Fortuner, also known as the Toyota SW4, is a premium SUV. The Toyota Fortuner is based on the Toyota Hilux platform and comes in six versions with two engine, one fuel and two transmission options. The Toyota Fortuner is one of the largest SUVs available in the country today.

The price of the Toyota Fortuner ranges between Rs 25.19 lakh to Rs 28.35 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom New Delhi. The chief competitors of the Toyota Fortuner are Ford Endeavour, Mahindra Ssangyong Rexton, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Skoda Yeti, Isuzu MU-7, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Renault Koleos and Chevrolet Trailblazer.  

ENGINE AND SPECIFICATIONS

 D-4D diesel engine produces maximum power of 169 bhp in Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner is offered with two diesel engine options- the 3.0 litre, 4 cylinder, in-line, D-4D diesel engine that churns out a maximum power of 169 bhp at 3600 rpm and 360 Nm of peak torque at 1400 – 3400 rpm. While, the second engine is 2.5 litre, 4 cylinder, diesel engine that produces 142 bhp of maximum power at 3400 rpm and 343 Nm of peak torque at 1600 – 2800 rpm.

Both the engines are coupled with 5 speed manual transmission gear box as well as 5 speed automatic transmission gearbox. Moreover, there are 4WD and 2WD drive options on the Toyota Fortuner. And, the car has turning radius of 5.6 metres.

In terms of acceleration, the Toyota Fortuner achieves the 0 – 100 kmph barrier in just 9.61 seconds with a top speed of approximately 176 kmph.    

As far as the fuel efficiency is concerned, the ARAI mileage figure of the Toyota Fortuner with manual transmission is 12.55 kmpl, whereas the automatic delivers 14 kmpl. Besides, the Toyota Fortuner comes with a fuel tank capacity of 80 liters.

INTERIOR

The Toyota Fortuner has attractive interiors. The SUV gets sand beige colour tone, whereas the top variant gets black colour scheme. The all-black dashboard with black glossy wood finish is equipped with advanced instrument cluster.

The Toyota Fortuner is loaded with plenty of features like keyless entry, touch screen DVD display and navigation with voice recognition, Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in connectivity, automatic climate control, cruise control, 6-Way power adjust driver seat, leather wrapped gear lever knob, roof mounted rear AC vents, paddle shifters, printed antenna and chilled glove box. 

Moreover, the Toyota Fortuner has a seating capacity of 7 passengers and seats are comfortable and wide, at the same time the SUV has ample head room, leg room, knee room and shoulder room. The boot space capacity of the Toyota Fortuner is 296 litres, that can be expanded further by folding the second and third row seats with armrest. 

PERFORMANCE

The performance of the Toyota Fortuner is decent. The SUV provides a comfortable riding, at the same time the handling of the car is fine. On the braking front, the SUV gets ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. In addition, the SUV is fitted with double wishbone front suspension and non-independent rear suspension for the 2WD version and 4-link with lateral rod rear suspension for the 4WD version.

On the safety front, the Toyota Fortuner is integrated with almost all essential safety features such as dual SRS airbags for the driver and front passenger, vehicle stability control, Anti-Brake Locking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, shift lock system, seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters for front seats, reverse camera with parking sensors, door ajar warning, LED high mount tail lamps, engine immobilizer and Global Outstanding Assessment (GOA) body.

ADVANTAGES

The Toyota Fortuner looks massive, muscular and huge. The SUV has luxurious interior with new features and lots of space. The exterior of the car looks sporty and stylish. Vehicle handling is also decent.             

DRAWBACKS

The fuel efficiency figure of the Toyota Fortuner is below average. Rear tail lamp design of the SUV is not very attractive. Apart from these, some advanced features are available only in high end variants.

The Toyota Fortuner is a stylish and sporty looking SUV. The vehicle comes with several advanced safety and comfort features along with powerful engines. The SUV is perfect for large families.
